Erin Krakow thought Ben Rosenbaum was just busy preparing for their hospital stay to welcome their baby—until she saw the sealed envelope he quietly slipped into the side pocket of her overnight bag and realized he had been planning something behind her back for weeks.
By the time the sun came up over their quiet Nashville neighborhood, casting long, golden shadows across the frost-tipped lawns of their street, the house already felt like a command center.
Erin was eight months pregnant, moving slowly through the kitchen in soft gray leggings and one of Ben’s oversized collegiate sweaters.
The wool was worn thin at the elbows, carrying the faint, comforting scent of cedarwood and his aftershave.
One hand was pressed firmly to the underside of her heavy belly, supporting the sudden, sharp kicks of their unborn child, while the other held a mug of peppermint tea that had gone cold twenty minutes earlier.
The kitchen counters, usually a pristine expanse of white quartz where they spent lazy Sunday mornings making pancakes, were completely crowded.
They were buried beneath baby bottles still encased in their sterile plastic packaging, waiting for a final boil.
Beside them sat towering stacks of neatly folded organic cotton swaddles, three different types of coiled phone chargers, a massive canvas tote overflowing with carefully curated snacks for labor, and a printed checklist.
Ben had made the checklist three nights ago in color-coded sections—neon pink for triage, bright yellow for the recovery room, blue for discharge—as if he were preparing for a grueling, multi-month cross-country expedition instead of a standard two-day hospital stay just four miles down the road.
Ben was everywhere at once.
He moved through the house with a humming, restless energy that seemed entirely at odds with the stillness of the early morning.
From her spot by the island, Erin watched him march into the hallway, drop to one knee, and aggressively test the tension on the infant car seat straps.
He was checking the car seat straps again.
He tugged at the nylon webbing, muttering under his breath about the chest clip alignment, before nodding in terse satisfaction.
A moment later, he was in the living room, wielding a canister of antibacterial wipes, sanitizing the handles on the rolling luggage.
Then he was back by the bassinet, refolding the baby’s coming-home outfit—a tiny, impossibly soft sage-green knit onesie—because, according to him, “the zipper shouldn’t crease in photos.”
He smoothed the fabric flat against the mattress pad with the precision of an engineer, his brow furrowed in deep concentration.
Normally Erin would have laughed at how serious he was being.
She would have walked over, wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, rested her chin on his shoulder, and teased him about his sudden, overwhelming descent into stereotypical new-dad neurosis.
But that morning, there was something different about him.
