He Came Home With Another Woman—But Someone Was Already Recording

than two minutes before it detonated.

Who is she, Grace asked.

Preston told her to lower her voice.

Grace said she had gone to the bank.

The woman in silver, whose name Grace would later learn was Celeste Monroe, turned toward Preston with a look of instant panic.

Grace mentioned the shell companies, the forged papers, the custody file.

Preston’s face emptied out the way dangerous people’s faces sometimes do when calculation takes over.

Give me your phone, he said.

No.

If you ruin this for me, he said, voice low, you have no idea what I’ll do.

He lunged.

Grace turned, off-balance with pregnancy, and his shoulder hit her hard enough to slam her against the glass table.

Pain ripped across her side.

Warm fluid rushed down her legs.

Her water had broken.

James was in the room almost immediately.

He had been recording from the hallway the moment he saw Preston escort another woman into the apartment.

He captured the argument, Preston’s attempt to seize Grace’s phone, the impact, and the moment Grace folded around herself in shock.

Don’t touch her again, James said.

Preston stared at him.

Who the hell are you?

James looked first at Grace, who was trying to breathe through a contraction so strong it shook her, and then at Preston.

I’m her father, he said.

Later, Grace would remember that sentence more clearly than the sirens.

James lowered her onto the couch, dialed 911, and then made the call that changed everything.

He called Lena Ortiz.

James did not waste words.

He said his daughter had just been assaulted by the subject of the pending fraud package.

He said the assault was on video.

He said Preston now knew Grace had accessed the deposit box and would start destroying evidence the second he had the chance.

If the government wanted intact devices, preserved accounts, and unshredded paper, they needed to move that night.

That call changed the timeline from careful preparation to immediate action.

NYPD officers arrived with EMS first.

Grace was transported to Mount Sinai West in active early labor.

James went with her after giving police the hallway video and identifying the woman in silver still standing numb by the door.

Preston tried to regain control the way he always had, by speaking calmly and pretending everyone else was hysterical.

But the officers had already seen the footage.

One remained with him.

Another began taking statements.

Within an hour, federal agents and local investigators were coordinating with the U.S.

Attorney’s Office.

Because James had already turned over the deposit box documents in the days before Christmas, the assault video and the risk of destruction gave prosecutors the urgency they needed for preservation orders and rapid warrants.

Before midnight, Preston’s phone was seized.

Agents moved on his office.

His email access was frozen.

Emergency notices went to the bank handling the flagged transfers.

Celeste, faced with the reality that the evening had gone from affair to federal investigation in less than an hour, agreed to speak.

She was not innocent, but she was not prepared for prison either.

By dawn she had admitted that Preston had been rerouting portions of client arbitration settlements through two shell entities, then shifting liability documents into Grace’s name.

She also confirmed that Preston had discussed portraying
