A year after Derek left for Hawaii thinking he had arranged another safe week of silence, Emily walked across her high school graduation stage in black shoes and a blue cap that kept slipping over one eye.

She did not use a wheelchair.

She did not bow her head.

She did not let anyone else answer for her.

Monica shouted so loudly from the bleachers that people turned and laughed.

I laughed too.

Emily found us in the crowd afterward and came straight over, diploma clutched in one hand, every step her own.

She hugged her aunt first.

Then she hugged me.

Over her shoulder I could see the gym doors open and close, families spilling out into the hot evening, cameras flashing, flowers everywhere, the ordinary beautiful chaos of a life that had finally been returned to its rightful owner.

For a long time I had thought courage looked like force.

What I learned from Emily was that sometimes courage looks like standing up from the couch the second the car disappears, telling the truth in your own voice, and trusting that someone in the room might choose to hear you.

She had told me we had seven days to take her life back.

She was wrong about one thing.

It took much longer than seven days.

But in every way that mattered, she got it back.

And this time, it stayed hers.
