was just beginning to bud.

I kept the recipe box from the kitchen, the brass porch bell, and the framed pencil marks from the laundry-room wall where I had measured the children every birthday.

Maybe it does.

But cruelty that careful, written down and timed to the day, is more than fear.

They say he was seventy-eight, lonely, vain, manipulated, human.

All of that can be true.

It is also true that he looked me in the eye and tried to use my grandchildren as the price of my obedience.

I do not spend much time deciding whether he deserves forgiveness.

I spend it enjoying the life that was supposed to be taken from me.
