My Neighbor Asked One Question—And Nothing Stayed The Same

that over the fence? The beers? Talking football? Was that real, or were you just working your way in?’

That one hit where it hurt because I understood why he was asking it.

I said, ‘It was real.

All of it.

This was never some plan.’

‘You’re basically my age,’ he snapped.

‘I know,’ I said.

‘Then act like it.’

Kora put her napkin down with deliberate calm.

‘No.

You do not get to talk to me like I’m a teenager who snuck somebody through a window.’

He stared at her, stunned.

She kept going.

Her voice wasn’t loud, which somehow made every word sharper.

‘For twenty-four years I was Dean’s wife before I was Kora.

Since the divorce, I’ve been your mother, the woman people worry about, the woman people pity, the woman people think they understand.

The first time someone knocked on my door because I asked and not because they wanted something from me, I remembered I was still a person.

You don’t have to like this tonight.

But you do not get to erase me to make yourself comfortable.’

Nobody spoke for a few seconds after that.

Then Brett pushed his chair back and left.

I stood up too, not sure whether I should go after him or disappear.

Kora looked wrecked, but not uncertain.

That mattered.

I said I could step back if she needed room.

She looked straight at me and said, ‘Do not vanish just because this is hard.

I’ve had enough men do that.’

So I didn’t.

A week later Austin got one of those sudden hard freezes that make everyone remember pipes exist.

I was outside wrapping my own spigots when I saw Kora’s exposed line along the side of her house and walked over with extra insulation without asking.

I was halfway through taping it down when Brett’s truck pulled in.

He got out, watched me for a second, and didn’t say anything.

Kora wasn’t home yet.

For once there was no audience, no kitchen table, no chance to hide behind being polite.

He finally said, ‘My dad told my mom she was too old to be interesting the month he left.’

I straightened up slowly.

Brett shoved his hands into his jacket pockets and stared at the siding.

‘Then he moved in with a twenty-nine-year-old and expected everybody to call it honesty.

So yeah, when I looked at you two, I saw a mess.

I saw my mother getting humiliated all over again, just from the other angle.’

That was the first time I stopped defending myself long enough to hear the shape of his fear.

I said, ‘I get why you saw it that way.

But I am not here because she’s lonely, and I’m not here because she’s older.

I’m here because when she calls, I go.

Because when I’m with her, my life feels less empty.

Because this is the most real thing that’s happened to me in a long time.’

He looked at me like he wanted to argue, but the fight had gone out of the moment.

After a while he said, ‘I still hate the age thing.’

I nodded.

‘You might for a while.’

He let out one tired breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

‘Probably.’

That night he stayed for dinner.
