Sometimes he came alone.

I never had a clean answer for that.

Some people who heard the story said I was cold for bringing a lawyer into family business.

Others said I waited too long.

Maybe both are true in their own ways.

What I know is this: I got my money back the day the house sold, but money was never the only thing I had been paying.
